Another breakdown of the elevators at the Surgical Block of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has forced the facility’s management to announce a suspension of elective surgeries until further notice.
The management is confident that repair works on the elevator will be completed within a week.
As a major referral center in the country, the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital is notable for receiving a significant number of emergency referral cases and other medical conditions that require further treatment.
The facility performs over one hundred surgeries a day, which necessitates the effective and prompt functioning of its systems. However, for some time now, the hospital has faced challenges with faulty lifts, hindering its ability to offer healthcare services to patients to the fullest extent.
A month ago, there were reports of faulty lifts at the facility, hindering patients’ ability to be transported to higher floors. The situation has recurred, this time at the surgical block, forcing the management to focus on emergency surgeries for now.
A visit to the facility revealed that the elevators were faulty.
The CEO of the hospital, Dr. Opoku Ware Ampomah, is confident that surgeries will fully resume within a week.
“We have made some procurement for new elevators but it will keep long like 6months before they arrive, so we needed to work on the old ones. Because of that healthcare delivery must not be affected that’s why we have diverted the cold cases which are not emergency. We are still handling the emergency surgeries at other theatres. We should be done within the week for full surgeries to commence”. He said
It remains to be seen if the timeline given for the repairs will be met, but the situation calls for long-term solutions to prevent such disruptions in the future.
