Surviving kidney disease: The sad case of Nathaniel Adansi

Some kidney patients who rely on dialysis for survival have had their conditions deteriorated following the temporary closure of the Renal Unit at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

Nathaniel Adansi, an end stage kidney patient is one of the patients. His health has deteriorated.

It is the case that 13.3% of people are reported to be living with chronic kidney conditions in Ghana requiring constant dialysis for survival.

The closure of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital Renal Unit has worsened the plights of some patients as seeking dialysis services at private facilities comes at exorbitant fees.

34-year-old Nathaniel Adansi is an assembly man living with kidney condition.

He has end stage kidney disease after being diagnosed of the condition early last year.
Doctors at KBTH Renal Unit have recommended a transplant but Nathaniel is constraint with funds.

Nathaniel said his condition came to him as a shock because there were no warning signs. Now his feet are swollen, and his health continues to deteriorate.

Speaking to Stanley Nii Blewu of 3news.com, Nathaniel said “one you are diagnosed of kidney disease, you will die. But I don’t want to die so I am appealing to the public to support my treatment.”

Member of Parliament for Madina, Francis Xavier Sosu whose community-initiated fund has been catering for Nathaniel’s dialysis has fast depleted.

The MP is now leading a campaign to solicit for funds to give Nathaniel a better life.

He said, ”Nathaniel was elected to serve his people, I am pleading with Ghanaians, the clergy, and any other person to help give him life so he can work for Ghana.
Currently, Nathaniel cannot work but hoping for intervention to remedy his condition.
