Renal patients look forward to accessing care at Korle Bu teaching Hospital this week

Renal disease patients can seek dialysis services at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital from today following the hospitals assurance to fully resume dialysis treatment at the facility this week.

Management of the facility is also expected to meet with leadership of the dialysis patients on how monies will be reimbursed to their members who are beneficiaries of the free dialysis programme, but have had to pay for dialysis elsewhere.

The hospital in a statement said the resumption of the service follows the facility’s ability to secure a significant quantity of essential consumables for dialysis, which is currently being processed for delivery to Korle Bu from the Tema Port.

The Dialysis Centre was closed for days, without any notice to patients. Though elated about the decision, the patients want government to find a more sustainable way of getting the consumables for the unit.

President of the Renal Patients Association, Kwadwo Baffour Ahenkorah though elated about the development, says government must ensure the persistent closure of the facility due to lack of consumables ceases.

“It’s good news, since many of our members are always in distress whenever they close the place. We are happy the Minister says the consumables are in, but Management must find ways to ensure this recurrence is a thing of the past.

“Every time it is closed, it’s opened. These are human lives and it’s too much. Before these consumables get finished, they must ensure there are some available.

“I will be having a meeting with the Management today on the reimbursement of the funds to our members who have paid for their dialysis all this while but are not supposed to under governments free dialysis program,” he said.
