Improving healthcare delivery: Ghana Health Service launches network of practice in Essuowin and Antoakrom
In a bid to provide timely and quality healthcare to residents of Amansie West in the Ashanti Region, the Regional Health Directorate has launched what it calls ‘Network of Practice’ in Antoakroam and Essuowin.
The initiative is designed to bring health professionals together at the sub-district level to work as a team optimally to strengthen primary healthcare.
Achieving the Universal Health Coverage by 2030 under Sustainable Development Goal 3 for Ghana is being impeded by several factors, especially in the rural part of the country.
In the Amansie West District, poor road network and inadequate health personnel is a major challenge affecting timely and quality healthcare delivery.
“Because of the terrible state of our roads, most commercial vehicles have stopped rendering their services in our areas. So, when someone needs emergency medical attention, he or she must resort to motorbike and this affects timely arrival at the health facility”, Chief of Essuowin, Nana Akyena Kwagyan Nuama V indicated.
The Ghana Health Service has however launched a model called ‘Network of Practice’, where all health professionals in a district will collaborate, share knowledge and work together towards achieving the optimum.
This is to bring quality health care closer to Ghanaians, irrespective of one’s location.
Ashanti Regional Health Director, Dr Emmanuel Tinkorang gave further explanation after inaugurating the model in Amansie West.
“The Network of Practice is a collaboration of health professionals; both in the public and private sectors, to work as a team and identify challenges that affect quality healthcare delivery. They will then join hands to improve on it,” he said.
The Amansie West District Director of Health, Bernard Badu Bediako extolled the Essuowin chief for providing his community with a maternity block, which he says has contributed to improved maternal healthcare.
“The new maternity unit has improved maternal healthcare compared to last year. There has been a general improvement in our healthcare indicators within the first half of the year and the health professionals in the district must be commended for this as well,” he stated.
