Delegates of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) will on September 4 go to the polls to elect a presidential candidate for the December 7 general election.
The date was announced by the National Executive Council after leadership approved and cleared the candidature of two senior members of the party to contest.
The immediate past chairperson of the party, Nana Akosua Frimpomaa Sarpong Kumankumah, and a private legal practitioner, Frimpong Yaw Anokye have only seven days to convince delegates on why they should be given the chance to lead the party in the upcoming presidential elections.
Leadership of the party has admitted that it is far behind time with its campaign activities, but hopeful of catching up as soon as it tackles the presidential primaries.
The party’s activities suffered delay due to a legal tussle between members and leadership.
“NEC has taken a decision that no member of the party in our current state should take the party to court in any angle. We should all come together to get out of the situation at hand.
“The election is going to be decentralized to rejuvenate the base of the party within the 16 regions”, secretary to the congress committee, Eben Agbenya noted.
The party hinted of its decision to field parliamentary candidates in only strategic constituencies.
“We have started working on our parliamentary forms. We e are not just going to field candidates in all the 275 constituencies but selected area where we have noticed that work is in progress on the ground and we have candidate that are marketable there”, Mr Agbenya stated.
The two presidential candidate aspirants are all hopeful of being given the nod to lead.
“I have distinguished myself well to earn the trust of the delegates. My competitor is a respectable person but where we are as a nation, we need to someone who will make history and not narrate history. I am more than convinced that the delegates will elect me”, Nana Akosua Frimpomaa Sarpong Kumankumah, CPP flagbearer aspirant said confidently.
Frimpong Yaw Anokye also indicated that “I have espoused Nkrumahism more than anyone. Overwhelmingly, the delegates should push me forward to become the flagbearer of the party especially at a time when we do not have even up to 3 months to campaign for thr general elections”
The delegates will, on Wednesday, September 4, decide on who to represent the Convention People’s Party on the presidential ballot in the December 7 election.
