TV personality and Co-host of TV3’s New Day, Cookie Tee together with Gospel singer, Celestine Donkor have issued sincere apologies for their jokes about Ewe surnames during a live telecast of a show on TV3.

The gospel singer during an interview on Today’s Woman with Cookie Tee over the weekend said she once prayed to God for a husband without ‘heavy’ ewe surname which is common in her culture.

While passing a comment on Ewe surname, the host, Cookie Tee whose maternal side is Ewe also agreed with Celestine’s sentiment, stating she did not want to marry a man with a difficult-to-pronounce Ewe name.

However, their jovial comment has been met with backlashes from a section of Ghanaians who seem offended and regard the comment as a mockery of the Ewe tribe.

Cookie Tee on Thursday morning while hosting the New Day Show explained that the comment was just to excite the show and not to denigrate the Ewe tribe.

“It was supposed to be an ice breaker to a conversation, it wasn’t supposed to be the way it was taken at all. This morning, sincerely from my heart, I just want to apologise to all of you, it was a joke that went bad.

“I’m rendering my apology to the ewe community and Ghanaians. It was a joke and not meant to denigrate the ewe community,” she offered her apologies.

Celestine has also apologized for her statement in a video posted on social media emphasising that she did not mean to mock the Ewe tribe and very proud of her tribe.

“I granted an interview on Today’s Woman on TV3 and when I discovered the host, Cookie Tee is an Ewe, I just got excited, and we started joking about the heaviness of our Ewe surnames. It was just a joke that came up in a conversation.

“To my surprise, from all the comments I’ve read so far, it turns out to be a bad joke, an expensive joke. And who am I? I’m just human. Most of the time, when we go on these interviews, as much as we have a pure heart and a clear mind, it’s not everything you say that will be pleasing to somebody, and so I’m sorry,” she stated.
